Veneers Q & A
What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are wafer-thin restorations made out of porcelain to change the shape, length, size, and color of your teeth. They require very little preparation and provide a quick, simple solution to many cosmetic dental concerns. The Alamo Dental Excellence team may recommend veneers if you suffer from:
- Cracked teeth
- Misaligned teeth
- Uneven teeth
- Tooth discoloration
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Large tooth gaps
Not only do dental veneers look and feel exactly like your natural teeth, but they are also stain resistant.
How do dental veneers work?
At Alamo Dental Excellence, a team of dental experts is available to create an individualized treatment plan for you. In most cases, the first step of the dental veneers process is to take X-rays, scans, and impressions of your teeth.
Next, your teeth must be prepped for the veneer. To ensure the veneer fits perfectly, without bulging outward, a small amount of enamel must be removed to make room for the porcelain restoration. Once the tooth is fully prepared, you take impressions of your teeth to serve as an accurate model for your customized veneer.
Depending on the severity of your dental issues, you may be fitted for a temporary dental veneer while your restoration is fabricated in the lab. It takes anywhere from two to four weeks to fabricate your dental veneers. At your final visit, the temporary restoration is removed and replaced with your permanent veneer.
Once the veneer is bonded to your tooth, your dentist cuts, reshapes, and molds it until it looks perfect. The veneer is then light cured and hardened for approximately 60 seconds, ensuring it is as strong as your existing teeth.
How do I care for my veneers?
Veneers are meant to look and feel just like your natural teeth, so you care for them as you would the rest of your mouth. This means brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash, in addition to scheduling bi-annual visits at Alamo Dental Excellence.
While porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, you can help maintain their quality by avoiding stain-inducing foods and beverages, such as coffee, black tea, red wine, and dark berries.
Veneers are the perfect solution if you want to improve your smile without undergoing invasive dental procedures. To find out if you are a good candidate for veneers, call Alamo Dental Excellence, or book an appointment online today.
